The Shaarei Teshuva explains that one the steps of Teshuva is that the baal teshuva should learn to consider aveiros kalos as very serious. He gives four reasons for this:
1. it's not the gravity of the action, but the greatness of the One who commanded you in it
2. think of thick rope made up of many thin strands put together. the strength of the rope lies in the many thin strands. the strength of my avodas Hashem is made up of the strength in each of the smaller mitzvos.
3. if you disregard one mitzvah entirely, considered heretic
4. yetzer hara builds up in little increments. first it's a little of this. then a little of that. then a little more. then a little more. Hayom omer lo asos kach ulimachar omer lo asos kach. . .
